Unlock the Thomas Dixon Centre in West End, one of the official hubs of Brisbane Open House.

Over one special weekend we invite you to take part in a range of free events perfect for history buffs, art lovers, and urban explorers. Or wander freely and enjoy the lively atmosphere with entertainment throughout the building, while you soak up the rich history of this unique space.

From 12.30pm on Saturday 13 July – 31 August we will be exhibiting works by the local artists, provided by The Brisbane Urban Sketchers.

Our rooftop venue, the Kite Terrace will be open from 8am – 5pm, offering beautiful views of Brisbane’s cityscape along with a selection of refreshments for purchase.

An exceptional chance to listen to Judy Watson and Jo Woolley, the Artist and Creator of the stunning carpets designed for the Thomas Dixon Centre in conversation with Danielle Renshaw, the Art Curator. Guided Building Tours of the Thomas Dixon Centre

Take a guided tour through the revitalised Thomas Dixon Centre, rich in history, art and creativity.

Led by an expert guide, the 1.5-hour tour will take you through this state-of-the-art building, the old and the new, to hear stories from the original boot making factory days to its present incarnation as home of Queensland Ballet.

Discover new spaces, enjoy stunning public art, and learn about the building ethos with community, health and wellbeing at its heart.

A unique opportunity to watch Queensland Ballet dancers in a Company Class, a daily ritual for our Artists, where dancers can prepare for their day, brush up on technique, test different steps and connect with fellow dancers before beginning rehearsals.

Prepare to be inspired by the craft of ballet in the beautiful surrounds of the Li Cunxin Studio at the Thomas Dixon Centre.

Kurilpa Futures Historic Walks

Saturday 13 July 2024 from 9.45am

Kurilpa Futures is a volunteer community group from West End, working closely with Queensland Ballet under the banner of the Montague Road Project. They advocate under the motto of “Planning for People” to ensure the growth on the peninsular is focused on liveability. This has led to many improvements including the street furniture on Boundary St and additional trees on Vulture St between Hardgrave and Boundary.

Kurlipa Futures is a passionate group of locals, with infinite knowledge about the Kurilpa Peninsula. Be sure to join this historic walk to find out the hidden stories of the suburb, among them the many layers of Orleigh Park from First Nations hunting ground to today’s riverside recreation park.

Starting at the New Farm ferry terminal, the walk includes a joyful ferry ride to the West End ferry station. During the commute Maurice from Kurilpa Futures will point out some interesting sites you might have never heard about!

Sundown Meditation Session on the Rooftop Kite Terrace

Finish the busy Brisbane Open House Festival weekend with an hour of mindfulness meditation, as the sun set across the Brisbane City skyline. During this session, Amanda, an experienced accredited yoga and meditation teacher, will touch on the topic of gratitude. The attendees will explore short, simple breath awareness that can be incorporated into the day or week, anytime, anywhere. These will help to balance the nervous system, reduce stress & anxiety, and support the relaxation response.
