Mandolin Journeys

About

Brisbane’s love for band music dates back to 1857, but it was formalised in 1916 when four bands—three of which still perform today—joined forces to provide free concerts in public parks. In partnership with Brisbane City Council, Brisbane Metropolitan Bands has delivered a weekly community music program for over 100 years. The original eight bands boast a combined 500 years of service and continue to evolve, embracing multicultural collaborations, original works, and diverse styles. Notable bands include the Brisbane Municipal Concert Band (est. 1903), Brisbane Excelsior Band, and South Brisbane Federal Band (both est. 1912). These groups have contributed to Brisbane’s cultural life through events like the Story Bridge opening and Anzac Day ceremonies. Despite wars, depressions, and shifting musical trends, community music thrives. From brass and orchestral to jazz and hip hop, Bands in Parks—Council’s longest-running program—honours tradition while embracing innovation and a vibrant future.
